We, at RC Worst & Company are a dealer for Weld-On. Weld-On Adhesives, Inc. is the pioneer and leading manufacturer of Weld-On® solvent cements, primers and cleaners for PVC, CPVC, ABS and other plastic piping systems. Weld-On products are globally-recognized as the premium products for joining plastic pipes and fittings.
I have outlined directions recommend by Weld-On on the use of their Solvent Cement for PVC Piping Systems (Weld-On 705 PVC) in the seven steps below. Before starting installation, be sure to have all the proper tools, products, and applicators required for job.
- Cut pipe square and deburr or bevel 10-15 degrees. Clean and dry joining surfaces. All surfaces to be joined must be free of foreign material.
- Check dry fit. Fitting should go over end of pipe easily but become tight about half to two-thirds of the way on. A tight fit is essential if quick pressurization is required.
- Use a suitable applicator at least half the size of pipe diameter, for large sizes use swab or roller.
Before starting the application, wear proper safety glasses and nitrile gloves. Weld-On products are flammable and should not be used near sparks, heat, flame, or other sources of ignition.
- Apply Weld-On Primer if required. The Uniform Plumbing Code requires the use of a listed purple primer. Can be used without primer on non-pressure systems if local codes permit. For each application, rotate at least 10 times around pipe.
- Working quickly, apply a full, even layer of cement of the pipe equal to the depth of socket. Coat the fitting socket with a medium layer. Avoid excess and puddling. Apply a second, full layer on pipe. Cement should fill all gaps. For each application, rotate at least 10 times around pipe. Do not let the solvent cement run down the inside of the fitting or pipe.
- Immediately assemble while cement is wet. It not completely wet, recoat parts before assembly. Twist 1/8 to ¼ turn until reaching pipe stop. To avoid pushout, hold for about 30 seconds. Wipe off excess solvent cement.
- Allow 5 minutes for good handling strength and 30 minutes cure time up to 160 psi, interference fit up to 2” at 60°F(16°C) and above. For pipe sizes over 2”, higher pressure, or temperatures below 60°F(16°C), allow longer cure time.
Note: We, at RC Worst, highly recommend using primer. The primer prepares the PVC surface by softening the material so the cement has more to adhere to, giving you a stronger, more reliable connection.
Cautions: Always read labels and Safety Data Sheets prior to use of cement.
