Types of Wire for Submersible Well Pumps

In this blog post today, we will explain the pros and cons of the two most popular types of submersibles well pump cable.

The Twisted Wire is an everyday go to wire, it is better for shallow wells. This way if there is a problem with the well then it is not as expensive to pull out the wire and replace it. Overall, it is better for lighter duty applications.

The Double Jacketed Wire is great when heavy duty cable is needed. It has the same primary coating as your twisted wire, but it also includes a secondary coating that can withstand additional abrasion. Due to the flat profile of double jacketed wire, tighter clearances are maintained inside the well. The deeper the well the more chance it is meandered back and forth, which causes the wire to rub against the casing or the walls of the well leading to abrasion or wear and tear on the cables. Therefore, having that extra layer of protection as well as the lower profile is a good protection policy.

The main reason you may not want to use the Double Jacketed Wire could be the additional cost over standard twisted cable, but in our professional opinion, wire is an important component that can extend the life of your well pumping system. It is more of an investment to go with the heavy-duty wire. It can withstand more times of being pulled and put back into the well. Overall, both products are great, and Twisted wire can last years in the right application.
